Mini-Lit
Sacred Heart Primary School uses MiniLit, a MultiLit research initiative developed by Macquarie University, as an early literacy intervention for young readers in Years 1 and 2 who need extra support to get started with reading. Students are placed in small groups of up to four and identified for the program because they are not progressing at the same pace as their classmates.
Specially trained teachers and classroom assistants deliver sessions using structured materials, with each lesson covering three key components: Sounds and Words Activities, where children learn to connect letters with their sounds; Text Reading, where they practise these skills; and Story Book Reading, where the teacher reads and discusses a book with the group to build vocabulary and comprehension.
The school values MiniLit for its strong track record. Research over the past five years has consistently shown that students make remarkable gains following the program, helping them catch up before reading difficulties become more established.
Choir
The Sacred Heart Primary School Highgate Choir brings together students who share a love of singing and performing. Rehearsing weekly throughout the school year, the choir works under the guidance of dedicated staff to build vocal skills, musicality, and confidence in a supportive group setting.
The choir provides students with meaningful performance opportunities, including leading and enriching the singing at school Masses and other liturgical celebrations, as well as an annual performance at the Catholic Performing Arts Festival alongside choirs from other Catholic schools.
In 2025, our choir shone brightly, receiving the Brigidine Sisters’ Award for Primary School Singing, an achievement that reflects the commitment and talent of both our students and staff.
Clubs
Sacred Heart Primary School offers a range of lunchtime clubs that rotate throughout the year, giving students the chance to explore different interests in a relaxed, supportive setting.
These have included STEM Club, where students engage in hands-on experiments and problem-solving activities; Lego Club, which encourages creativity and collaborative building; Drawing Club, offering a space for artistic expression; and Chess Club, which builds strategic thinking and patience. By rotating the clubs on offer, students are encouraged to try new experiences and discover interests they may not have considered before.
These lunchtime clubs play an important role in student wellbeing, providing a positive and enjoyable break from the classroom, opportunities to build friendships across year levels, and a chance to develop skills and confidence outside the formal curriculum.
