Children’s Religious Education begins at home. The experiences children have at home will be the primary influence on their faith development. Teachers strive to build on the firm foundations already laid by the parents. This means that teachers and parents are partners in teaching children about how they can best live their faith.
“Religious Education is the first Learning Area in the Catholic school curriculum. This is so because, though a classroom activity, Religious Education is a form of the Ministry of the Word. Unlike the other Learning Areas, it is an activity of Evangelisation in its own right.” (Mandate Letter, 43, Catholic Education Commission of Western Australia).
“The Religious Education program to be taught in the Catholic school is that promulgated by the diocesan Bishop” (Mandate Letter, 43). The Religious Education Units are the integration of faith, life and culture. Students at Sacred Heart experience a wide range of learning opportunities that are derived from this program.
Students are prepared to receive the Sacraments of First Reconciliation, Eucharist and Confirmation. Preparation for the reception of Sacraments is Parish based, family centred and school supported. The Religious Education Outcomes provided in CEWA’s Religious Education units of work allow teachers to plan, teach and assess student knowledge at an appropriate level. Currently students in Years Three and Five sit the Archbishop’s Test in Religious Education.
